چکیده
Next-generation large segmented mirror telescopes are expected to perform direct imaging and characterization of Earth-like rocky planets, which requires contrast limits $10^{-7}$ $10^{-8}$ at wavelengths from I J band. One critical aspect affecting the raw on-sky polarization aberrations arising reflection telescope's surfaces instrument optics. We simulate estimate their effect on achievable for three next-generation ground-based telescopes. performed ray-tracing in Zemax computed Jones pupil maps using algorithm. The impact these is estimated by propagating through a set idealized coronagraphs hcipy, physical optics-based simulation framework. optical modeling giant (GSMTs) shows that create significant leakage coronagraphic system. dominant aberration retardance defocus, originates steep angles primary secondary mirrors. defocus $10^{-5}$ $10^{-4}$ 1 $\lambda/D$ visible wavelengths, $10^{-6}$ infrared wavelengths. simulations also show coating plays major role determining strength aberrations. Polarization will need be considered during design high-contrast instruments next generation extremely This can achieved either compensation optics, robust coronagraphs, specialized coatings, calibration, data analysis approaches or incorporating polarimetry with measure effects.

Lyot Coronagraphy on Giant Segmented-mirror Telescopes
We present a study of Lyot style (i.e., classical, band-limited, and Gaussian occulter) coronagraphy on extremely large, highly-segmented telescopes. We show that while increased telescope diameter is always an advantage for high dynamic range science (assuming wavefront errors have been corrected sufficiently well), segmentation itself sets a limit on the performance of Lyot coronagraphs. Diff...
متن کاملPolarization compensation of Fresnel aberrations in telescopes
Large aperture space telescopes are built with low F#’s to accommodate the mechanical constraints of launch vehicles and to reduce resonance frequencies of the on-orbit system. Inherent with these low F# is Fresnel polarization which effects image quality. We present the design and modeling of a nano-structure consisting of birefringent layers. Analysis shows a device that functions across a 40...
متن کاملMeasurement accuracy in control of segmented-mirror telescopes.
Design concepts for future large optical telescopes have highly segmented primary mirrors, with the out-of-plane degrees of freedom actively controlled. We estimate the contribution to errors in controlling the primary mirror that results from sensor noise and, in particular, compare mechanical measurements of relative segment motion with optical wave-front information. Data from the Keck teles...
متن کاملPolarization Aberrations in Astronomical Telescopes: The Point Spread Function
Detailed knowledge of the image of the point spread function (PSF) is necessary to optimize astronomical coronagraph masks and to understand potential sources of errors in astrometric measurements. The PSF for astronomical telescopes and instruments depends not only on geometric aberrations and scalar wave diffraction but also on those wavefront errors introduced by the physical optics and the ...

ENGINEERING NOTES are short manuscripts describing new developments or important results of a preliminary nature. These Notes should not exceed 2500 words (where a figure or table counts as 200 words). Following informal review by the Editors, they may be published within a few months of the date of receipt. Style requirements are the same as for regular contributions (see inside back cover).
